Services

What we do, and what you get

Five service areas. Each entry sets out what the work covers, the kind of request it suits, what you receive at the end, and what we need from you in order to quote.

Research and Consultancy Support

Additional research capacity for organisations and independent consultants. The work is desk based: finding, reading and organising existing evidence, then setting it out in a form your team can use.

What this covers

  • Desk research on a defined question or sector
  • Literature and document reviews
  • Evidence reviews and research summaries
  • Research assistance for consultancies and independent consultants
  • Subcontracted research support on a defined scope
  • White-label research support where the arrangement is agreed in writing
  • Preparation and organisation of briefs and reports from available evidence
  • Research documentation and synthesis

Typical requests

  • A consultancy has won a tender and needs a background chapter drafted from published sources within three weeks.
  • An NGO needs the existing evidence on a programme area pulled together before it designs an intervention.
  • An independent consultant needs a second pair of hands to screen and summarise sixty documents.
  • A programme team needs its scattered internal reports organised into one readable synthesis.

What you receive

  • A written review, brief or synthesis in your preferred format
  • A source list with full references and access dates
  • A screening or inclusion table where a review method is agreed
  • Draft and revised versions within the agreed revision rounds

What we need from you

  • The research question or terms of reference
  • Any documents, datasets or internal material you want covered
  • The output format, length and citation style you need
  • Your deadline, and who will review the draft
Worth knowing Subcontracted and white-label work can be discussed where scope, confidentiality, deadlines and responsibilities are agreed in advance. We do not write academic assignments, essays, theses or dissertations for students to submit as their own work.

Data Cleaning, Tabulation and Analysis

Practical help with a dataset you already hold. We clean and check it, then produce the descriptive analysis, tables and charts needed to see what it says. Analysis stays within what the data can actually support.

What this covers

  • Cleaning and organising client-provided datasets
  • Checking data consistency and identifying apparent errors
  • Descriptive statistical analysis
  • Frequency tables, cross-tabulations and summary statistics where appropriate
  • Tables and charts that communicate findings clearly
  • Data summaries and analytical reporting
  • Support with interpreting results within the limits of the available data

Typical requests

  • A survey has closed and the export needs cleaning before anyone can use it.
  • A programme needs its monitoring data tabulated for a donor report.
  • A team has results but needs the tables and charts prepared for a report.
  • A dataset has duplicates, inconsistent codes and missing values that need resolving and documenting.

What you receive

  • A cleaned dataset in an agreed format, with the original left untouched
  • A record of the cleaning decisions made and the issues found
  • Frequency tables, cross-tabulations and summary statistics as agreed
  • Charts and tables prepared for your report
  • A short analytical summary describing what the data shows

What we need from you

  • The dataset, with any codebook or questionnaire
  • What you want to find out from it
  • Whether personal data is present, so handling can be agreed first
  • The output format you need, such as Excel, CSV or a written report
Worth knowing The work covers descriptive analysis. We do not advertise advanced statistical modelling, econometrics, specialised forecasting or causal inference. Descriptive analysis describes what is in a dataset. It does not establish cause, and no particular finding can be promised in advance.

Research Transcription and Language Support

Turning research recordings into usable written records. Transcripts are formatted for analysis rather than delivered as raw text, so they are ready for coding or quotation.

What this covers

  • Transcription of research interviews
  • Focus-group transcription, with speaker separation where the recording allows
  • English and Swahili transcription, and translation support where appropriate
  • Formatting and organisation of transcripts for research use
  • Preparation of readable research records from supplied recordings

Typical requests

  • Twelve key-informant interviews need transcribing before analysis begins.
  • Focus groups were held in Swahili and the team needs English transcripts to work from.
  • Existing transcripts need reformatting and timestamping for a coding exercise.
  • A recorded consultation needs a clean written record.

What you receive

  • Transcripts in an agreed format and template
  • Speaker labels and timestamps where the recording supports them
  • Notes marking inaudible or uncertain passages rather than guessing at them
  • A translated version alongside the source language where translation is agreed

What we need from you

  • The recordings, with an indication of length and number of files
  • The languages spoken
  • Your preferred transcript template, or we will propose one
  • Confirmation that participants consented to the recording being transcribed
Worth knowing Whether a job can be accepted depends on recording quality, length, language, deadline, confidentiality and any consent arrangements that apply. Turnaround is quoted per job once the files have been assessed. We do not publish standard turnaround times we cannot reliably meet.

Workshop Documentation and Reporting

A clear written record of what was discussed, agreed and assigned at a meeting, workshop or consultation. Available either as an on-site rapporteur assignment or as a report prepared from material you supply.

What this covers

  • Rapporteur services at a meeting, workshop or consultation
  • Workshop proceedings
  • Meeting documentation
  • Consultation summaries
  • Records of key discussions and decisions
  • Action-point summaries with owners and dates
  • Activity reports and documentation of recommendations

Typical requests

  • A three-day stakeholder workshop needs proceedings that a donor will accept.
  • A consultation produced many contributions that need organising into themes.
  • A team has recordings, notes and slides from an event and needs one coherent report.
  • A committee needs decisions and action points recorded consistently at each sitting.

What you receive

  • Workshop proceedings or a meeting report in an agreed structure
  • A decisions log and an action-point table showing owner and due date
  • A thematic summary of discussion where that is more useful than a chronological record
  • An executive summary for circulation

What we need from you

  • The agenda, participant list and any presentations
  • Recordings or notes, if the report is to be prepared from supplied material
  • The dates, venue and expected attendance, for an on-site assignment
  • The report structure your organisation or donor requires
Worth knowing Two different arrangements are available and they are priced differently. An on-site rapporteur assignment means attending the event and taking the record directly. A desk-based report means preparing the document from recordings, notes and papers you provide. Travel and accommodation for assignments outside Nairobi are agreed separately.

Specialist focus

Crime, Criminal Justice and Public Safety Research

Research and analytical work on crime, criminal justice and public safety. This is the subject area the business is built around, and it is where the other four services are applied to a specialist field.

What this covers

  • Crime research and analysis
  • Crime patterns and public safety, where suitable data and evidence are available
  • Crime prevention research
  • Victimisation research
  • Criminal justice systems and processes
  • Justice-sector governance and accountability
  • Corrections and rehabilitation
  • Reintegration and related social issues
  • Policy research and evidence reviews on justice and public safety
  • Research reports and analytical briefs on relevant subjects

Typical requests

  • An organisation needs the published evidence on a crime prevention approach reviewed before it designs a programme.
  • A civil society organisation needs an analytical brief on an aspect of criminal justice process.
  • A programme working on reintegration needs the existing literature synthesised.
  • A team holds administrative data on case flow and needs it cleaned, tabulated and described.

What you receive

  • Evidence reviews on a defined justice or public safety question
  • Analytical briefs written for a policy or programme audience
  • Research reports with sources and dates recorded throughout
  • Descriptive analysis of administrative or survey data you provide

What we need from you

  • The question or policy problem you need addressed
  • Any data you hold, and its source and collection method
  • The audience for the output, and the length and format expected
  • Any ethical approval or permission already in place, or needed
Worth knowing This is research and analytical work. It is not private investigation, background screening or security consultancy, and none of those services are offered. Desk research and analysis of data you supply are different from independently conducting fieldwork, collecting sensitive data or carrying out regulated research activity. Where an assignment would involve those, the scope and any approval requirements are assessed before it can be accepted.

What we do not offer

Being clear about this saves everyone time. Angavu Africa Insights does not provide private investigation, background checks or screening, security consultancy, security risk assessment, security audits, security plans, guarding or security training. We are a research and analysis business, not a security firm.

We also do not write academic assignments, essays, theses or dissertations for students to submit as their own work.

Not every project can be accepted. Whether we take one on depends on the scope, the deadline, the data involved, any approvals required and whether we can do the work properly. If we cannot, we will say so.

Tell us about your project

Describe what you need and when you need it. We will come back with a quote, or tell you straight away if it is not work we can take on.
